How We Build a Gravel Driveway That Lasts
1. Layout, Clearing, and Excavation
We mark the driveway path, clear vegetation and topsoil, and excavate down to stable subgrade. On wooded lots we combine this with our land clearing service so one crew handles trees, stumps, and grading. Skipping this step is the number one reason driveways fail – gravel laid over topsoil or sod will sink and rut no matter how much stone you add later.
2. Geotextile Fabric Where Clay Demands It
Much of Stafford and Spotsylvania sits on heavy clay that pumps mud up through stone under load. Where soil conditions require it, we lay commercial geotextile fabric between subgrade and base stone. It is a small cost during construction that doubles the working life of a driveway on soft ground.
3. Compacted Base Stone
We build the base with large crushed stone (typically VDOT 21A or crusher run), placed in lifts and compacted. The base – not the surface gravel – is what actually carries your vehicles. A proper base for residential use runs 4 to 6 inches compacted; driveways that will see trucks, trailers, or RVs get more.
4. Surface Gravel, Crown, and Drainage
The finished surface is laid with a center crown so water sheds to the sides instead of pooling and soaking the base. Where the lot needs it, we cut swales or install culvert pipe so runoff crosses under the driveway instead of across it. Drainage is the difference between a driveway that needs a touch-up every few years and one that needs to be rebuilt.
