Why Quality Topsoil Matters
Supports Healthy Plant Growth
Topsoil is the nutrient-rich upper layer of soil where plant roots establish and thrive. Quality topsoil contains organic matter, beneficial microbes, and proper drainage – poor-quality fill dirt won’t support grass, flowers, or vegetables.
Improves Drainage and Water Retention
Good topsoil balances drainage (preventing waterlogged roots) with water retention (preventing drought stress). Clay-heavy soil stays too wet; sandy soil drains too fast. Quality topsoil provides the right balance.
Establishes New Lawns Successfully
Grass seed needs 4–6 inches of quality topsoil to germinate and establish deep roots. Planting seed in compacted clay or fill dirt results in thin, weak lawns.
Builds Raised Beds and Planters
Raised garden beds, vegetable gardens, and landscape planters require fertile topsoil to produce healthy crops and ornamental plants.
Levels Yards and Fills Low Spots
Low areas collect water and kill grass. Spreading topsoil fills depressions and creates smooth, level lawns.
Enriches Poor Native Soil
If your property has heavy clay, rocky soil, or nutrient-depleted dirt, adding 4–6 inches of quality topsoil creates a healthy growing layer for plants.
What We Deliver
Screened Topsoil
Our standard topsoil is screened to remove rocks, roots, debris, and large clumps. It’s ready to spread and plant immediately. Ideal for lawns, gardens, and general landscaping.
Premium Topsoil Blends
Topsoil blended with compost or peat moss for enhanced fertility and water retention. Perfect for vegetable gardens, flower beds, and high-value landscaping.
Fill Dirt (Budget Option)
For areas where plants won’t grow (under driveways, raising grades, filling large areas), we also deliver unscreened fill dirt at a lower cost. Note: Fill dirt is NOT suitable for planting – use topsoil for lawns and gardens.
Compost-Enriched Topsoil
Topsoil mixed with aged compost for maximum fertility. Excellent for organic gardens and areas needing immediate nutrient boost.
Custom Soil Blends
Need a specific soil mix for a specialty garden or project? We can source custom blends from local suppliers. Call to discuss.
Topsoil Uses and Applications
New Lawn Installation
Spread 4–6 inches of topsoil over graded areas, rake smooth, and seed or sod. The topsoil layer gives grass roots room to establish and access nutrients.
Lawn Repair and Overseeding
Spread 1–2 inches of topsoil over thin or bare lawn areas, overseed, and water. The fresh topsoil helps new grass germinate and fill in.
Raised Garden Beds
Fill raised beds with 12–18 inches of quality topsoil (or topsoil/compost blend) for vegetable gardens, flower beds, or herb gardens.
Flower Beds and Landscaping
Amend existing soil or create new planting beds by adding 4–6 inches of topsoil. Plant shrubs, perennials, and annuals directly into the enriched soil.
Leveling Yards and Filling Low Spots
Fill depressions, smooth bumpy lawns, or build up low areas with topsoil. Grade smooth and seed for a level, even lawn.
Tree and Shrub Planting
Mix topsoil with native soil when planting trees and shrubs to improve root establishment and early growth.
Erosion Control
Spread topsoil on bare slopes, seed, and cover with erosion control blankets to stabilize embankments and prevent runoff.
Topdressing Established Lawns
Spread a thin layer (1/4–1/2 inch) of topsoil over established lawns to improve soil quality, level minor bumps, and encourage thick turf.
Container Gardening
Fill large outdoor planters and containers with quality topsoil for container vegetable gardens, ornamental grasses, and large potted plants.

Frequently Asked Questions About Topsoil Delivery
What’s the difference between topsoil and fill dirt?
Topsoil is the fertile top layer of soil rich in organic matter and nutrients – it supports plant growth. Fill dirt is subsoil (clay, sand, rocks) used for grading and building up elevations – it won’t support plants. Always use topsoil for lawns and gardens.
Is your topsoil screened?
Yes. Our standard topsoil is screened to remove rocks, roots, and debris. It’s ready to spread and plant.
Can I use topsoil under a driveway or patio?
No. Topsoil is organic and will compress and settle over time. Use compacted fill dirt or crusher run for structural bases.
How much does a cubic yard of topsoil weigh?
Approximately 2,000–2,400 lbs (about 1 ton) depending on moisture content.
Can you dump topsoil in my backyard?
If we have truck access (12+ feet wide, firm ground, no overhead wires), yes. Otherwise, we dump near the street and you wheelbarrow it or we can spread it with our equipment (additional cost).
Do I need to be home for delivery?
Not if we know exactly where to dump it. Most customers prefer to be home to direct placement.
Will topsoil kill my existing grass if I spread it on top?
Thin layers (1/2 inch or less) won’t smother grass – this is called topdressing. Thick layers (2+ inches) will kill grass underneath. If filling low spots, remove existing grass first or plan to reseed.
How long does topsoil last?
Topsoil doesn’t “expire,” but organic matter breaks down over time. Adding compost or fertilizer every few years maintains soil fertility.
Can you deliver a partial yard (less than 1 cubic yard)?
Our trucks carry full cubic yards. Minimum delivery is typically 1 yard. For very small amounts (a few bags), consider bagged topsoil from a garden center.
Do you offer topsoil spreading service?
Yes. We can spread topsoil with skid steers or track loaders, rake smooth, and prepare for seeding. Call for pricing.
