Orange County is wine country, horse country, and historic-property country – which means it is also old-growth-tree country. Three-foot-trunk white oaks. Hundred-foot tulip poplars. Mature hickories along agricultural fence lines. Pine clusters on the back acres of multi-acre estates. When one of those trees fails – or needs to come down before it does – the work is real. That is what IronHaul Co shows up for across Orange County.

We travel to Orange out of our Fredericksburg shop for the larger tree-removal projects the county tends to call us for – multi-tree estate prep, hazardous old-growth near historic homes, vineyard-edge work before harvest, storm-damage response on long rural driveways. Track loaders, forestry mulchers, climbers, dump trailers, rural-grade equipment. See our main tree removal service page for full scope.

Orange is in our extended service area – small single-tree jobs at the far edges may have a travel minimum, but multi-tree and estate-scale work is what we are routed for here. We respect historic landscapes and we carry full general liability coverage.

Tree Services We Provide in Orange County

Old-Growth Hardwood Removal

This is the signature Orange County call. Three-foot-trunk oaks. Hundred-foot tulip poplars. Mature hickories that have been growing for a century. Taking one of these down near a house, barn, or driveway is rigging work – climbers, anchor points, controlled section cuts. We do this routinely on Barboursville estates and Somerset properties.

Hazardous and Dead Tree Removal

Old-growth trees fail differently from younger trees – hollow trunks at the base, dead crowns, root-system rot from old construction. Better to call before the storm. We assess, document the hazard, take them down safely, and haul the debris.

Storm Damage Emergency Response

Orange County gets hit by every weather system that rolls across central Virginia. Wind damage to old-growth hardwoods, ice damage to mature pines, summer derechos that take down trees across rural roads and long driveways. We respond when we can – call (540) 717-9758 directly and we will tell you immediately whether we can be on-site today, tomorrow, or scheduled for the same week.

Tree-on-House, Tree-on-Barn, Tree-on-Driveway

Rural Orange emergencies. An oak across the roof of an estate house. A tulip poplar through a barn roof on a working farm. A pine blocking the only access to a long rural driveway. We rig sections off in controlled cuts, document for insurance, and clear the property.

Vineyard-Edge and Agricultural-Edge Tree Work

Vineyards, working farms, and equestrian facilities have specific tree-work requirements – schedule around harvest, work around livestock, protect irrigation and trellis infrastructure. We have done it before. Pair with our broader Orange County services for full vineyard and agricultural site work.

Mature-Tree Removal with Rigging

Old-growth Orange County hardwoods near houses, barns, vineyards, or power-line drops. Climbers, lowering lines, controlled section cuts. Same crew, fully insured.

Stump Grinding

Grinding six to twelve inches below grade. Quoted as add-on with every removal, or as standalone service. Multi-acre Orange estates often have stumps from decades of previous tree work – we will quote a whole set.

Hardwood Haul-Off

Orange County old-growth produces serious hardwood debris. Limbs, chunks, trunks – all of it loaded into our dump trailers. The rural haul distance is real (the closest commercial disposal points are well outside the county) – our dump trailer capacity absorbs it. Tie in our junk removal service for non-tree debris in the same visit.

Lot Clearing and Tree Lines

Orange County calls us for full-acreage clearing as much as for single-tree work – clearing wooded building lots for new estates, creating new pasture, prepping vineyard rows, opening sightlines on long-held properties. See our land clearing and skid steer services pages.

Insurance Documentation

For any storm-damage tree work tied to a homeowner, farm, or estate insurance claim, we deliver photo documentation, itemized invoicing, written hazard assessment, and adjuster-ready paperwork – usually same day or morning after. Estate and farm policies often want more detailed paperwork than standard homeowner claims. We are set up for it.

Historic-Property Tree Work

Orange County has irreplaceable historic landscapes – James Madison’s Montpelier area, historic estates, properties with mature plantings dating to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. We protect what is around the work area and we use methods appropriate to the setting.

Orange County Areas We Cover for Tree Work

  • Town of Orange – county seat, established residential, mix of in-town lots and acreage just outside.
  • Gordonsville – southern Orange, rail and historic district, older estates with mature hardwoods.
  • Barboursville – vineyards, established estates, mature canopy on the wine-country corridor.
  • Somerset – central Orange, rural acreage, old-growth on multi-acre estates.
  • Montpelier Station – historic, James Madison estate area, historically significant landscapes.

Why Orange County Calls IronHaul for Tree Work

  • Old-growth experience. Three-foot trunks, hundred-foot tops, root systems generations old. We have the climbers and rigging for it.
  • Rural-acreage capability. Half-mile driveways, back-acre tree lines, perimeter hardwoods three hundred yards from the house. Track loaders, forestry mulchers, dump trailers.
  • Hardwood haul-off small crews cannot match. The Orange haul distance to commercial disposal is significant – our dump trailer capacity absorbs it. Other crews leave debris on-site.
  • Vineyard and agricultural-edge experience. We schedule around harvest, work around livestock, protect irrigation and trellis.
  • Historic-property respect. We protect what is around the work area and use methods appropriate to the setting.
  • Insurance-ready documentation. Estate and farm policies want detailed paperwork – we are set up for it.
  • Rigging for mature-tree work. Climbers, anchor points, controlled section cuts.
  • Volume pricing for multi-tree estate work. Six dead pines plus two hardwoods near the house gets priced as one project, not eight.
  • Licensed and fully insured. Certificates of insurance available on request.

How Tree Removal Pricing Works in Orange County

Tree pricing in Orange varies with size, lean, proximity to structures, access, and type of wood. Rough ranges:

  • Small tree, under 30 feet – $300 to $750
  • Medium tree, 30 to 60 feet – $750 to $1,800
  • Large tree, 60 to 90 feet – $1,800 to $4,500
  • Extra-large old-growth oak or poplar, 90 plus feet, rigging required – $3,500 to $8,500 plus (signature Orange County removals usually fall here)
  • Storm-emergency response – quoted on site, priority pricing applies
  • Stump grinding – $150 to $450 per stump depending on diameter
  • Wood haul-off – included unless you want the wood left or milled

For Orange County specifically, single-tree jobs at the far edges of the county (deep Somerset, far Montpelier Station, remote rural addresses) include a rural-distance line item to cover travel – typically $200 to $400 for the smallest single jobs. We also have a general $500 to $1,000 service minimum for smaller projects in extended service areas. Multi-tree and estate-scale work absorbs the travel and is priced on scope alone, often with volume discounts on six-plus-tree projects. All quotes are free and written.

Recent Orange County Tree Removal Projects

Old-Growth Oak Near Historic Home – Somerset Estate

Three-foot-trunk white oak with a hollow base and a lean toward an early-1900s farmhouse on a multi-acre Somerset estate. Owner had been told by two other crews the takedown would risk the house. Our climbers rigged from three adjacent hardwoods, lowered the tree in five major sections over a single crew day, ground the stump flush, and reset the historic-lawn area where the equipment had been staged. No damage to the home, no damage to the surrounding plantings. Insurance covered most of the cost as hazardous-tree mitigation.

Vineyard-Edge Hardwood Line Reset – Barboursville

Working vineyard called us in late winter to clear a row of declining hardwoods along the edge of a new planting block. Three large oaks, one hickory, and several smaller scrub trees. We scheduled the work between dormant pruning and bud break so we did not disturb harvest or trellis operations. Two crew days, full debris haul-off, stumps ground below grade so the row could be planted to the new line. Vineyard manager rebooked us for a similar job on a different block the following year.

Multi-Tree Storm Sweep – Rural Orange County

August derecho dropped trees across a corridor running from Gordonsville through Somerset. We ran a focused two-day sweep – six properties, mostly down trees across long rural driveways and one across a hay barn roof. The barn job took most of a day with rigging because the structure was compromised. All six homeowners had insurance documentation packets by the end of the week. Crew on-site fast because we batched the route – one rural address would not have justified the trip alone, six did.

Orange County Tree Removal FAQ

Do you handle insurance claim work? Will you talk to my adjuster?

Yes. Storm-damage and hazardous-tree mitigation are regular Orange County calls. Before/after photos, itemized invoicing, written hazard assessment, same-day documentation. Estate and farm policies want more detailed paperwork – we are set up for it. We will get on the phone with your adjuster directly.

Do you travel to Orange County regularly? Service minimum?

Yes – we travel weekly for larger projects. Small single-tree jobs at the far edges (deep Somerset, remote Montpelier Station) typically have a $500 to $1,000 minimum. Multi-tree and estate-scale work has no minimum.

What about the stump? Is grinding included?

Stump grinding is quoted as an add-on. Multi-acre Orange estates often have stumps from previous decades – we will quote a whole set in one visit.

How big a tree can you handle?

Up to and including 100-plus-foot old-growth oaks, tulip poplars, and hickories. Three-foot-trunk old-growth is well within our rigging capability.

Will you take the wood? Can I keep some? Can you mill it?

Wood haul-off is included unless you tell us otherwise. Want rounds left for firewood? We will stack what you ask for. We do not mill on-site but can leave sections cut to your length if you have a sawyer lined up – Orange has several who do good work on old-growth.

Are you ISA-certified? Insured for tree work?

We carry comprehensive general liability rated for tree work. For complex health-assessment questions, particularly on historic-landscape trees, we coordinate with a certified arborist. For removal itself we are fully equipped and fully insured.

Can you work around a vineyard, working farm, or equestrian facility?

Yes. Vineyard access roads, crush-pad infrastructure, event-area work. Around horses we work quietly and we do not leave hazards in pastures. We schedule around harvest, foaling, or events.

Do you do volume pricing on multi-tree estate projects?

Yes. Multi-tree clearing, full-acreage tree-line resets, and six-plus-tree property scopes qualify for volume pricing.

How fast can you respond to an emergency?

Typically same-day from our Fredericksburg shop if a crew is available, next-day if not. For multi-property storm events we batch the route. Call (540) 717-9758 directly.
